History of the 'Pet Barn' concept

The concept of the ‘pet barn’ started in Australia, way back in the 1970's when Ken Geddes began his specialty store 'The Pet Barn' selling quality fresh meat to breeders to feed their dogs. A one-of-a-kind store, he sold only quality meat to dog owners who were serious about their pet’s nutrition. His store in Western Sydney became so popular with locals because it was the only store that offered quality produce and a team with expert know-how. So much so, people were flocking to his store from all over Sydney and even New South Wales!

Ken recently passed away in 2013 but his original vision will live on for many years to come.

Where We Fit In

We were inspired by Geddes’ vision and today we continue to keep our two and four legged customers happy by providing them with the same high quality pet food that made Geddes' first 'Pet Barn' such a success.

While the original barn-store concept primarily sold food, we’ve added a whole new range of pet products to the mix to meet all your little mate’s requirements. We have wall-to-wall products covering premium and everyday food as well as vet products and supplies to best suit your pet’s every need. Now we’re online too, if there isn’t a store near you just yet, our online store delivers nationwide so we’ve got you covered.

Every four legged visitor to our store is greeted with plenty of pats and cuddles from our staff. They’re welcome to browse the aisles and sniff out their own treats and toys, just as long as they’re on their best behaviour. Our staff like to get snap-happy too and they’ll ask if we can take a photo of your dog to upload online. Let them know if that’s ok with you!

Building further on the original concept, we’ve expanded to include the DIY Dog Wash and grooming facilities provided by our qualified in-house groomers. Geddes vision is continually being brought to life.

An integral part of this concept is that we do not sell animals of any kind. A pet store is no place to re-home or sell animals. We wholly support local shelters with a strict no-kill policy and certified breeders, encouraging our customers to adopt.

Much like the Geddes' inspired in-store 'Pet Barn' concept, our store hours and locations are centred around you proud pet parents. We know getting to run errands during the week can be a struggle, so when you want to take a browse in our stores you'll find us conveniently located in 2 of Australia's largest metro areas in Melbourne and Brisbane.

You can also enjoy our unique store concept at hours that suit you and your pet. We're open 7 days a week and on most public holidays, excluding some rare holidays like Christmas, Good Friday, and New Years.
